What Is Cloud Computing?

You’ve probably heard of it before, but as most others you might think “what is cloud computing?”. Apple’s new service, iCloud is a cloud computing service, and Amazon also provides such a service, so no wonder people ask what it is. To start off; it’s a bit hard to find the real definition of cloud computing, because there are so many different definitions by so many different people.

What Is Cloud Computing Storage?

We can, however, say that cloud computing “is secure access to your data by using any device connected to the Internet”. “The cloud” is basically a computer network where you can store your files and data, as well as having access to it from any place as long as you have an Internet connection on your device, instead of having your files on a local computer or hard drive. This is basically what iCloud will give you as well. A lot of websites are also hosted “in the cloud”, which basically means that their files is hosted “somewhere else”, not locally.

It might not sound very interesting, or even safe to store your precious files at some remote location, however just think about it: at least it’s a great place to have backups! The uptime at the cloud networks is so near to 100%, and you can access your files anywhere. Google Docs is another example of what is cloud computing.

So whenever someone ask you “what is cloud computing”, you can at least give them a short brief description of one of the newest and most expanding service a lot of us will use in the nearest future – both for backup and for storage. New OS’s like Google Chrome OS will be based on having access to the Internet – the cloud, with a few necessary files stores locally.
